Repairing Door Frame Hinge

Unlike wooden doors steel doors require a different approach to repair hinge screws that are pulled out of the door.

These tools slip over the hinges when the door is closed. Start at the bottom of the frame and work your way up. Remove the door stop and molding. To repair a loose door hinge.

Screw the hinge back into place after the glue is dry. If the hinge and jamb are painted cut the paint around the leaf with a utility knife swing the leaf away from the jamb. Tap the tee into the hinge screw hole with a hammer. Use a chisel and hammer or putty knife to pry the door stop and molding away from the frame. Test the hinge on the latch side a door is cut at a slight bevel to make it easier to close. Allow the glue to dry.

6 screw the hinges back onto the door using screws. Unscrew the loose screws and remove the hinge from on top of the stripped holes. Remove the screws that hold the loose hinge leaf to the door jamb. Squeeze a drop of carpenter s glue into each loose hole then push about 3 wooden matches or toothpicks into the hole or enough to fill it and snap the excess wood off.

When the door is swung open the loose screws pull out of the threaded mounting holes. If you have a centering hinge drill use the hinge as a template and the finish repair will be better than new and last for years. The hinge mortise is a shallow recess the hinge fits into on the side of the door. Coat a wooden golf tee with glue.

If a door binds open it grasp the knob and lift up to see if a hinge is loose. Try tightening the hinges which can loosen up over time causing the door to sag. How you fix the steel door hinge depends on the amount of damage to the screw threads. Score the tee with a utility knife flush with the mortise.

Clean the dried glue out of the hinge mortise using a chisel.
